Every four years, our calendar adds an extra day to the end of February. This "Leap Day" is a chance for our concept of time to catch up to that of the Cosmos, as the Earth's actual rotation around the sun is not exactly the number of days we think of as a year. In this workshop, we will explore using Leap Day as a day of ritual for taking stock of our personal progress and realigning as needed. Coleman Stevenson of The Dark Exact will offer simple concepts and tools for building personal rituals. Heather Agosta of The Jasmine Pearl will guide participants in creating a unique ritual tea blend of their own. Participants are encouraged to bring a tarot or oracle deck and a notebook to the workshop. All other materials will be provided.
Coleman Stevenson is the author of Breakfast, The Accidental Rarefication of Pattern #5609, and The Dark Exact Tarot Guide. Her writing has appeared in a variety of publications such as Paper Darts, Seattle Review, Mid-American Review, tarot.com, and the anthology Motionless from the Iron Bridge. In addition to her work as a designer of tarot and oracle decks, her fine art work, exhibited in galleries around the Pacific Northwest, focuses on the intersections between image and text. She has been a guest curator for various gallery spaces in the Portland, Oregon, area, and has taught poetry, design theory, and cultural studies at a number of different institutions there, most currently for the Literary Arts Delve series, which includes seminars at the Portland Art Museum.
Heather Agosta is the President and co-owner of The Jasmine Pearl Tea Company, a Portland, Oregon based importer, blender and wholesaler of specialty loose leaf tea. She and her husband, Chuck Bauman founded the company in 2004. Heather spent time studying aromatic herbalism and learning the art of flavor and scent design under the tutelage of a natural scent and flavor specialist. Her knowledge, love of tea and passion of the art of blending are apparent in her work at The Jasmine Pearl.
She has 13+ years of tea blend development experience and has created hundreds of specialty tea blends for her own company and for clients in the beverage and wellness industries. She has been serving as a tea educator in public and professional venues for a decade. She has taught broadly on the subject both on an introductory and advanced level. She particularly enjoys tea on the subjects of tea blend formulation, developing personal tea rituals, and tea preparation for food service.
Heather has managed both wholesale and retail operations of her company. This experience has given her a unique perspective in the tea industry over the past 13 years. Through the company’s retail channels, she has been able to witness the evolution of both consumer awareness of, and demand for, specialty tea. As a wholesale manager she has had an in-depth perspective of how specialty tea has grown in the food service, grocery, wellness and hospitality channels. As an importer, Heather has also had a great deal of experience on the topics of sourcing from origin, compliance with governmental regulations, food safety and organic certification. In 2016 Heather also co-founded Pearl Beverage Company, a manufacturer of craft tea concentrates and botanical syrups.
